The 442nd Infantry was a unique facet of the US Army during the Second World War. It was a unit composed only of Asian Americans - a majority of which were of Japanese descent, many whose families were subject to internment despite their service. The 442nd fought solely in the Mediterranean and European theater where they were a self-sufficient force, fighting with uncommon distinction in Italy, southern France, and Germany during the war.

The unit became the most highly decorated regiment in the history of the United States armed forces with:

• 21 separate Medal of Honor recipients
• 52 Distinguished Service Crosses
• 560 Silver Stars (plus 28 Oak Leaf Clusters)
• 22 Legion of Merit Medals
• 15 Soldier’s Medals
• 4,000 Bronze Stars (plus 1,200 Oak Leaf Clusters)
• 9486 Purple Hearts
• 1 Distinguished Service Medal

On October 5, 2010 the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and 100th Infantry Battalion.
